Since the introduction of Planning Policy Guidelines (PPG 15/16), desk based assessments have become an increasingly more important stage of the planning procedure.

It is likely that the majority of developments on brown / green-field areas will require some form of archaeological survey to be conducted and at very least a desk based report.

DVAS has experts who specialise in archive research available to assist in the production of these reports. A desk-based survey conducted by DVAS will involve the collation of all readily available archaeological and historical records for the proposed area.
The survey will include searches of:-
The county or district sites and monuments records (SMR).
The national archaeological record.
The county or district archive offices.
Local museums and libraries.
Local archaeological and historical society collections.
Engineering, geological and mineral extraction records.

A walk-over survey of the proposed area will also be conducted by one of our experienced archaeologists to photograph and identify any areas where archaeological / historical evidence may be present.

In-depth research is fundamental to a Desk Based Study.
